Doppelgangers are the heart of Shift At Midnight. Every night, some of your "customers" are not human — and serving them, or worse, turning away a real person, is how runs end. This page lists every known Doppelganger and the exact tell that gives them away.

How identification works: cross-reference every customer against the N.E.T. database computer (name, photo, date of birth, job), check the Midnight News notice board in the back room, and use your scanning tools. Later tools make this much easier — see the Tools & Items guide.

Golden Rules of Identification

Before the list, memorize these community-tested rules:

  • Look up everyone a customer mentions. If they name a relative or friend, search that name too — stories often contradict the database.
  • Date of birth must match the face. A customer claiming to be young with an old face (or vice versa) is out.
  • Tattoos, scars and birthmarks must match exactly. Height mismatches also mean rejection.
  • The world has no wizards, magic beans, or human photosynthesis. Anyone claiming otherwise is a Doppelganger.
  • Humans cannot levitate.
  • Recurring characters who act like it's the first meeting are Doppelgangers.
  • Background oddities (the corpse in the break room, the figure by the dumpster, the tall clerk, a car that shouldn't be there) are harmless atmosphere — don't panic over them.

Complete Doppelganger List

Doppelganger The Tell Night Tool Needed
Agnes Wells The real Agnes is a 3-year-old child. An elderly woman claiming to be Agnes is the Doppelganger — she has no eyes, calls you "dear" constantly, and cheerfully admits she's "3 years old and counting" Early Database
Amelia Kramer Invisible on the Anomaly Camera — no reflection/image appears Mid Anomaly Camera
Andal Khan Name tag reads ADNAL instead of ANDAL; Endless variant wears a construction uniform Night 2+ / Endless Observation
Anita Varma Right hand is severed and bleeding Mid Observation
Aria Romero Face distorts on the Anomaly Lens. Note: her glasses look painted-on but are real — not a tell Mid Anomaly Lens
Barry Aoki Noticeably larger than his photo; claims he ate magic beans Mid Database
Brandon Keller Ends every sentence with "probably" (Joe's Diner waiter disguise) Night 2 Dialogue
Clyde Dawson Documented Doppelganger with no reliable community tell yet — rely on tools Night 3 Tools
Dylan Pike The real Dylan always wears shorts. Long pants + "I don't care about shorts" = out Mid Database
Elise Hart No confirmed tell documented — use every tool before admitting Mid Tools
Emilia Carter If the Midnight News says the library is closed and she mentions studying there → guaranteed fake Mid Notice Board
Jade Sinclair Looks nothing like her database photo Early Database
Judith Calhoun Claims her husband Harold is home. The real Judith is a widow — Harold died in a car accident (press her on it and she slips: "OHHH yes I forgot, he's actually dead"). Red-rimmed eyes ("sad movie" excuse); always spends exactly $13 Night 2–3 Database
Julietta Granger Database says plumber; she claims to be a flight attendant Night 1 Database
Kevin Larson "Groovy" — dances on the Anomaly Lens. Careful: the short dancing man himself is human Mid Anomaly Lens
Louisa Mari The manager's friend has both versions. The Doppelganger visits first with impossibly long legs Mid Observation
Maya Davila Claims she just returned from a date with her husband — her husband is missing Mid Database
Mia Cannon Tattoo pattern doesn't match the database Mid Database
Nathan Calloway The real Nathan is dead. The fake uses a forged ID — the ID photo is actually Tommy Delgado's Night 1 Database
Net Pongsak Guaranteed Doppelganger. Levitates and always turns to face the camera on the Anomaly Lens Mid Anomaly Lens
Ramona Delgado The Emotiscope reads that she is craving human flesh Shift 6+ Emotiscope
Ren Takahashi Appears as a cat on the Anomaly Lens Mid Anomaly Lens
Tommy Delgado Claims to be shopping for his sister Catherine — Catherine is dead Night 3 Database
Travis Dunn Has no lisp. The real Travis does Mid Dialogue
Vivien Marrow Jump scares when viewed through the Anomaly Lens; guaranteed to appear once the Lens is unlocked Late Anomaly Lens
Wade Callahan Appears as a flesh parasite on the Anomaly Lens Mid Anomaly Lens
The Dentist Dangerous variant; limited documented tells — treat anomalies around dental themes as hostile Late Tools

Special Doppelgangers

  • Player's Doppelganger — your own elongated double ("the tall clerk"). Purely atmospheric; it does not attack.
  • Car Doppelganger — a vehicle that shouldn't be there (appears Night 1). Harmless.
  • Elongated Doppelganger — an SCP-3008-style stretched figure that appears after you restart the generator. Harmless but terrifying.

Known Humans — Do NOT Reject (or Kill)

Some characters trip up overzealous clerks. These are verified human:

  • Clyde Dawson (the sheriff) — your first customer on Night 1, always human. Protect him: killing Clyde voids every ending achievement.
  • Bonnie McCree — bald, Night 1, always human. "Often wears glasses" means the glasses are irrelevant, not a tell.
  • The short dancing man (Kevin in person) — human. "Don't ruin his groove." Only a dancing image on the Anomaly Lens is the fake.
  • Tofu the dog — a service dog belonging to Charles Wigglebottom. NOT the lost dog Guillermo (brown fur) from the poster — that mystery is a red herring.
  • The Robber (Night 3) — human and hostile; can be safely killed with no penalty (toilet paper works).
  • Victor the private investigator — human, but attacks you. Self-defense kills are fine.

How to Take Down a Confirmed Doppelganger

  • Headshots kill instantly. Body shots only wound them — they flee and you'll need follow-up shots, so aim for the head.
  • Afterwards: sledgehammer to break down the body, hose the blood, bag the remains. (The sledgehammer one-shots humans too — never swing it at the Robber or troublemakers, that's a fine.)
  • Alternatively, some players complete the transaction first and deal with consequences later — see the True Ending money route in the Endings guide.

Drivers

Customers who arrive by car can't be scanned with the Anomaly screener, but the Emotiscope still works on them. Identify drivers by searching the name on their car documents in the database.

What Happens When You're Wrong

  • Let a Doppelganger in → an Entity spawns and the Hunt begins (see the Hunt survival guide).
  • Reject a human → lost revenue and rating damage; killing a human hits your pay.
  • Note: there is no penalty for letting a Doppelganger buy something and leave — some players exploit this for the True Ending money route (see All Endings).

FAQ

How many Doppelgangers are there? Over 26 named Doppelgangers plus special variants. New ones appear in Endless mode.

Which tool is most important? The Anomaly Lens — it directly reveals many Doppelgangers (Aria, Kevin, Net, Ren, Wade, Vivien). Unlock and upgrade it as a priority.

Can Doppelgangers be killed? Yes — toilet paper pelting can kill some, and weapons work during confrontations, but killing decisions interact with the ending requirements. Read the Endings guide first.
