Shift At Midnight gives you a pet before your first shift — and that pet silently drives the whole 13-night story. It gets sick, the vet bills are brutal, and to pay them you work the night shift you were about to take anyway. This page covers everything known about the pet system: the four choices, the $40 medicine deadline, what your pet does on shift, and how it connects to the endings.

Shift At Midnight pet adoption — choosing your companion before the first shift

The Four Pets

You adopt your pet before your very first shift at Midnight Mart. The developer officially confirmed four choices:

Pet Notes
Cat The classic companion — quiet company during the dead hours.
Husky The snowy sled dog — larger presence, same shift help.
Puppy The small dog option for a more fragile-looking friend.
Goose The chaos option — the community's favorite and the most meme-friendly pick.

Picking a pet is cosmetic for gameplay. The developer's announcement doesn't list any stat differences between the four — they share the same sickness, medicine, and work mechanics. Choose on vibes.

Your Pet Gets Sick: The $40 Medicine Deadline

The reason you work the graveyard shift is right out of the official announcement: your buddy gets sick and the vet bills are expensive. Your pet needs its medicine within your first 3 shifts — so you hustle, manage the store, and make enough personal profit to pay for it while surviving the night.

  • Medicine costs $40 per prompt, and you should always pay it. Skipping it likely kills the pet early and ends the run before Night 13 even matters.
  • Missing the deadline ends badly. The game keeps the pet's health as a silent economy track running under the whole store-manager loop — same reason the $250 surgery at Night 13 sits at the center of the True Ending.

That medicine prompt also feeds straight into the money grind — see the Money Guide's pet notes for how the $40s add up against your top-earning route to $250.

What Your Pet Does on Shift

Keep your profit margins high and you unlock the best perk in the game: you can bring your pet with you on your shifts. Per the official announcement, your pet will:

  • Wander the store and keep you company during the quiet hours;
  • Clean up some of the mess left by customers (or their bodies) — freeing you to focus on stocking shelves, working the register, and interrogating "completely normal, definitely human" customers.

The service has a catch though — your pet eats evidence too. Per the community-verified Tips & Tricks reporting, a pet on shift eats leftover body parts — $0.10 lost per limb. If you're grinding chores, bag remains fast so your friend's snack budget doesn't eat your profit margin.

How the Pet Connects to the Endings

Your pet is the hinge of all three endings (see All Endings for the full walkthrough):

Ending Pet's fate Trigger
True Ending The pet gets surgery and survives Don't call Clyde after Shift 12 + have $250 personal funds by Night 13
Grave Decision Clyde sacrifices himself so the pet lives Call Clyde after Shift 12
Empty Home The pet dies and the station goes quiet Don't call Clyde + under $250 at Night 13

The three story endings each carry a Steam achievement (True Ending, Grave Decision, Empty Home) — and you can collect at most two per save file, since the Night 12 call is a binary choice. Start a second save to grab all three.

Fast Facts

  • Adoption is free and happens before your first shift — no in-game cost to pick a pet.
  • Medicine is $40 per prompt, needed within the first 3 shifts; always pay it, and keep enough cash on hand that a $40 prompt can't bankrupt you.
  • Pets on shift clean messes but eat body parts — lose $0.10 per limb eaten. Bag remains fast while grinding chores.
  • The $250 surgery at Night 13 is the True Ending checkpoint — and the reason the money routes exist at all.
  • No pet-stat differences confirmed between Cat / Husky / Puppy / Goose — the choice is cosmetic, so far.

Verified on the July 2026 build

Pet system details from Bun Muen's official "I added PETS to Shift At Midnight!" Steam announcement (pre-launch) plus the July 22 launch build's confirmed behavior ($40 medicine, $250 surgery, body-part eating) as verified by the community wiki and active Steam discussions. If the Q4 2026 Endless Mode update adds new pet behaviors, this page gets updated with the patch notes.
