Shift At Midnight drops you into the graveyard shift of a remote gas station with one rule: figure out which customers are human. This guide gets you through your first nights alive and earning.

The Core Loop (One Shift)

Each night follows the same rhythm:

  1. Customers arrive at the counter with items.
  2. Scan and charge their goods at the register.
  3. Identify them — cross-check name, photo, date of birth and job against the N.E.T. database computer, and read the Midnight News notice board in the back room for today's relevant clues.
  4. Accept or reject. A rejected human costs revenue; an accepted Doppelganger spawns an Entity and starts a Hunt.
  5. Between customers, do chores for money: clean stains, take out trash, deal with rats and roaches, clean the toilet.
  6. Survive until closing, then the next night begins — harder, with more tools unlocked.

Your First Night: Step by Step

  • Collect tokens first. Grab every golden token scattered around the store before reading the notice board — reading the board officially starts the shift.
  • Your first customer is Clyde Dawson, the sheriff — always human. He's also the man you may need to call on Night 12, so never, ever shoot him.
  • Night 1 introduces Julietta Granger (database says plumber — if she says flight attendant, reject; she opens with "Hey there, cutie") and Nathan Calloway (the real Nathan is dead; his ID photo is actually Tommy Delgado's). Check everyone.
  • Take your time at the database. There is no timer pressure strong enough to justify skipping a lookup.
  • Clean everything you can. Every stain is $0.10; every bag of trash is $0.10.

The Tools You'll Unlock

You start with just the database and the notice board. New equipment arrives as nights progress:

  • Anomaly Lens (camera) — reveals many Doppelgangers directly. Your most important unlock.
  • Emotiscope / EmotiScanner (unlocks at Shift 6) — reads emotional states; catches Ramona Delgado ("craving human flesh").
  • Anomaly Camera — some Doppelgangers (Amelia Kramer) don't appear on it at all.

Prize wheel top prize $10 store revenue
Pet medicine (when prompted) costs $40 — always pay it

Mistakes That Kill New Players

  1. Skipping the database lookup. The #1 cause of Hunts. Look up everyone, including people your customers mention.
  2. Ignoring the notice board. Emilia Carter's library tell only exists if you read today's news.
  3. Killing humans. Financially catastrophic, and killing Clyde Dawson voids every ending achievement.
  4. Killing rats instead of trashing them. $0.10 vs $3 — throw them in the dumpster.
  5. Panicking over background monsters. The break-room corpse, the figure by the dumpster, the tall clerk — all atmosphere, none of it attacks.

When a Hunt Starts

If a Doppelganger gets through, an Entity spawns. Key facts for beginners:

  • The main Entity is blind — it hunts by sound. Move carefully, and escape aggro through the vents.
  • Barricade the three exterior entrances (front, bathroom, back) before it arrives.

Should You Play Solo or Co-op?

The game supports 1–3 players and everything — including all endings and achievements — is doable solo. Co-op is easier: one person runs the register and identification while the other handles chores and barricades.

Where Next?

Good luck on the night shift. The customers aren't all human — but with the database open, neither are you fooled.
