Shift At Midnight Money Guide — Every Income Source & the $250 Route
The entire True Ending hinges on one number: $250 in personal funds by Night 13 for the pet surgery. This page covers every income source and both proven routes to the goal.
Your Salary, Explained
Each night pays $10 base + 10% of store earnings above quota.
Example: a $150 store day = $15 commission + $10 base = $25 personal.
Boss/manager tasks pay $20 straight into personal funds — outside the salary formula entirely. Always complete them.
Chore Values (Every $0.10 Counts)
| Chore | Pay |
|---|---|
| Clean a stain | $0.10 |
| Trash a bag / body part | $0.10 |
| Rat → dumpster (alive) | $3.00 |
| Rat killed | $0.10 (don't!) |
| Cockroach (mop) + clean remains | $0.20 |
| Clean the toilet | $0.40 |
| Blood puddle (incl. TP-farmed blood) | $0.10 each |
The rat rule alone swings a run: pick rats up and throw them in the dumpster. Killing them costs you $2.90 per rat.
The Token Wheel
Tokens scatter around the store every night. Spend 5 tokens per spin:
- Top prize: $10 store revenue
- Hat prizes (cosmetic) — once you own every hat, hat results refund your 5 tokens, making spins free thereafter
- Gambling is pure upside once hats are collected; spin every night
The Toilet Paper Economy
TP is the game's most broken item:
- Pelting customers draws blood — each puddle is another $0.10 to mop.
- Humans tolerate about 9 hits before it becomes a problem.
- TP kills Doppelgangers and the robber with no penalty.
- Yes, people farm blood puddles with TP. It works.
Penalties to Avoid
- Killing a human: a pay penalty large enough to sink a True Ending run. Zero tolerance on a clean route.
- The Sledgehammer one-shots humans — never swing it at the robber or troublemakers (that's also a fine).
- Pet medicine is $40 each prompt — always pay it. Skipping likely kills the pet before Night 13.
The Two Routes to $250
Route A: The Clean Run (tight, RNG-dependent)
Follow every rule above perfectly: no human kills, all chores, rats alive, boss tasks, wheel spins, medicine paid. Community testers finished $2–$20 short on near-flawless runs — the randomized Doppelganger count means some nights simply have few paying humans. Viable but punishing.
Route B: Let Everyone Buy (reliable)
- Serve every customer — humans and Doppelgangers alike — scanning, charging and releasing.
- Doppelgangers you let buy spawn entities, but there's no financial penalty for the sale itself.
- Spend the boom revenue on the flamethrower, shotgun, traps and win the nightly Hunts with hardware (see the Hunt guide).
- By Night 9–10 you'll hold $250; coast the last nights and pay for the surgery.
Route B trades calm nights for armed ones — and the math overwhelmingly favors it.
Pet Notes
You can keep one of four pets (Puppy, Husky, Kitty, Goose). Pets help during shifts but eat leftover body parts — each eaten limb costs you $0.10. Bag remains promptly if you're grinding chores.
FAQ
Is the $250 counted before or after Night 13? You must hold it when the ending resolves on Night 13 — the surgery prompt is the check.
Can store funds (not personal) pay for the surgery? No — the requirement is $250 in personal funds. Boss-task rewards and salary go personal; wheel winnings go to store revenue. Plan accordingly.
What's the single biggest money leak? Killing rats instead of trashing them, and missing boss tasks.
