The most-asked question about Shift At Midnight right now: can I play with my friend? The short answer is crossplay is partial — the Xbox ecosystem plays together, Steam does not (yet). Here's the complete picture as of August 2026.

The Short Version

  • Xbox Series X|S + PC Game Pass (Microsoft Store) can play together — the game is an Xbox Play Anywhere title.
  • Steam players are in their own pool. Steam cannot play with Xbox or Game Pass players right now.
  • PS5, Mac and Linux are not supported — the game is Windows/Xbox only.
  • 🔜 Full crossplay is planned. Per the developer in Steam discussions: "Steam won't feature crossplay on launch, but full crossplay is planned for an update post-release."

Why Xbox and Game Pass Can Play Together

Shift At Midnight launched day one on Xbox Game Pass as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Play Anywhere links the Xbox console and Microsoft Store PC versions into one ecosystem — shared friends lists, shared lobbies, and shared saves. That's why these two platforms crossplay while Steam (a separate storefront and backend) sits apart.

How Many Players Per Lobby?

  • The game is designed for 1–3 player co-op and everything is solo-achievable (see the Beginner's Guide).
  • A July 23, 2026 patch added 6-player lobbies — Steam hosts can now open lobbies up to six, though the store page's "up to 3 players" text hasn't caught up.
  • Local/couch co-op: not available — multiplayer is online only.

What This Means for You

  • Friend on Game Pass, you on Steam? You can't play together yet. Your options: one of you switches platform (Game Pass is the cheaper entry — it includes the game), or wait for the promised full-crossplay update.
  • Two friends on Steam? You're good — Steam-to-Steam works fine today.
  • Xbox household? Console + PC Game Pass players in the same lobby work today via Play Anywhere.

FAQ

Will crossplay come to Steam? The developer has publicly stated full crossplay is planned for a post-release update. No confirmed date yet — this page will be updated the moment it lands.

Is there cross-save? Between Xbox and the Microsoft Store PC version, yes — Play Anywhere syncs progress. Steam saves are separate.

Does crossplay affect the endings or achievements? No — all three endings and all achievements remain earnable in any supported configuration, including solo (see All Endings).

Is Shift At Midnight on PS5? No. Windows (Steam / Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S only.

What about the confusion over 4–6 players? That's the July 23 patch: lobbies now support up to 6, even though the core design is 3-player co-op. Both are "real" — 6 is the lobby cap, 3 is the intended experience.
