Shift At Midnight Hunt Survival Guide — Every Enemy Explained
Let a Doppelganger through the register and the Hunt begins: entities spawn and the station becomes a survival horror map. Every enemy in Shift At Midnight has a specific weakness. Learn them here before you learn them the hard way.
Before the Hunt: Barricade Priorities
The moment you suspect a mistake (or accept one on purpose for the money exploit):
- Barricade the three exterior entrances — front door, bathroom entrance, back door. Everything else is interior and doesn't need blocking.
- Buy weapons in advance with store funds: traps and the flamethrower are the workhorses.
- Know your healing: bandages can be used while running; the token medkit requires standing still, and its channel resets if you take a hit.
The Enemies
The Entity (main stalker)
- It is blind. It cannot see you — it tracks sound and contact.
- Walk, don't sprint, when it's nearby. Crouch routes are your friend.
- Shake aggro through the vents — crawling into the vent system drops its tracking.
- Surviving your first Hunt (whether a Doppelganger slipped through or you reached the first Blood Moon) earns the Still Breathing achievement.
Marionette (the music-box boss)
The community's most-hated enemy, and the subject of endless "how do I beat the marionette?" threads. Rules:
- Appears from Shift 9 onward. A chest spawns and music plays 10–15 seconds before it emerges.
- Wind the music box in time — that is the intended counter. If you fail to wind it, it attacks.
- Do NOT damage it casually: the more damage you deal, the faster it gets. Commit to burst damage only when you can finish it, or don't engage at all.
- Many guides mislabel this enemy as "the Demon" — if a guide describes a music-box chest and an enemy that speeds up when shot, it's the Marionette.
Demented (weeping angels)
- They freeze while you look at them — but the freeze is somewhat unreliable; don't bet your life on staring.
- Best counters: bear traps and landmines. Bait them onto a trap line and let the hardware do the work.
Shrieking Dolls
- Crawling baby-type enemies. Weak — swat them with any melee weapon and keep moving.
Blood Moon
- Unavoidable. No matter how perfectly you played the shift, a Blood Moon attack happens on schedule.
- The second Blood Moon is worse — "he brings friends." Stock extra traps before it arrives.
- Don't waste resources trying to prevent it; spend them surviving it.
The Fast Flying Ghost (community question)
The "fast flying ghost that follows you regardless of hiding" that players ask about is the Entity in its aggressive Hunt phase. The answer is the same: sound discipline + vents. Hiding in a corner doesn't work because it isn't looking with eyes — it's listening. Move silently, break line with the vent system, and let it pass.
Weapon Quick Reference
| Slot | Weapons |
|---|---|
| Melee | Brick · Baseball bat · Sledgehammer |
| Ranged | Pistol (default) · SMG · Shotgun · Flamethrower |
The flamethrower and traps are the Hunt meta — area denial beats aiming. Full purchase details in the Tools & Items guide.
Healing During a Fight
- Bandages: usable on the move — keep them bound to a quick slot.
- Medkit (token purchase): full stand-still channel; one hit resets it. Only use behind a barricade.
FAQ
Can I avoid Hunts entirely? Only by rejecting every Doppelganger perfectly — and for the True Ending money route, most players deliberately trigger and farm them instead.
What kills the Marionette fastest? Burst damage once the music box window passes. Chipping at it only makes it faster.
Do weapons carry between nights? Purchased equipment persists — another reason the exploit route (earn → arm → survive) works so well.
Enemy behavior compiled from community testing and Steam guides. The Marionette's spawn shift is reported as 9 by the achievements guide; some sources say 7 — treat Shift 7+ as the danger zone.
