Half the horror of Shift At Midnight is knowing your regulars — who can be trusted, who has a Doppelganger, and who will get you killed if you misread them. This page covers the recurring cast.

Allies & Regulars

Clyde Dawson — The Sheriff

Your first customer (Night 1) and the story's moral anchor. Always human in person — though a Clyde Doppelganger exists in the Night 3 pool with no documented tell, so run your tools.

Why he matters: after Night 12 you choose whether to call Clyde. Calling him triggers the Grave Decision ending — he comes in on Night 13 and dies so your pet can live. Not calling him leaves the pet's fate to your $250.

☠️ The cardinal rule: killing Clyde (or letting him die by your hand) on any night voids all three ending achievements. There is no one left to call.

Bonnie McCree

Bald, appears Night 1, always human. Her database note says she "often wears glasses" — meaning glasses are not an identifier for her. A common false-positive trap; don't reject Bonnie over eyewear.

Tofu — The Service Dog

A golden-furred dog customer belonging to Charles Wigglebottom (a housebound man — look him up in the database when Tofu visits).

Not the lost dog. The missing-dog poster shows Guillermo, who has brown fur. Community consensus: the poster is a red herring, and there is no way to "recover" Guillermo. Don't spend money or time on it.

Dangerous but Human

The Robber (Night 3)

Armed and hostile — but human, and safe to kill with no penalty. Toilet paper kills work famously here.

Victor — The Private Investigator

Human, but he attacks the player. Self-defense kills carry no penalty. Do not confuse aggression with being a Doppelganger.

Doppelganger-Prone Regulars

These recurring customers all have documented Doppelganger versions (full tells in the Doppelganger list):

  • Louisa Mari — the manager's friend. Uniquely, the Doppelganger visits first, with one leg impossibly longer than the other. (The community wiki has no page for her yet — a genuine gap.)
  • Judith Calhoun — the grieving "widow" test (her fake claims Harold is alive).
  • Julietta Granger — the Night 1 plumber/flight-attendant check.
  • Brandon Keller — the "probably" waiter.
  • The Delgado family — Nathan (dead man's ID) and Tommy (dead sister Catherine).

Background Figures (Harmless Lore)

None of these attack — save your ammunition:

  • The break-room corpse — ambient horror.
  • The Meccha Chameleon — a camouflaged figure, pure atmosphere.
  • The "secret admirer" by the dumpster — watches, never acts.
  • The tall clerk (your Doppelganger) — your own stretched double.
  • The skinless antlered figure — idle entity. Leave it alone and it rewards you with a heart made of gold coins. Shooting idle entities triggers aggressive phone calls ("we know... you are kind...").
  • The forest — over 15 collectible limbs and spooky audio, but no roaming monsters (outside Endless).

Unresolved Lore

  • The Calendar Killer — kills 8 victims on the 8th of each month, skipped December. Mayor Dawson's newspaper coverage hints he may be the Calendar Killer. The thread is (so far) deliberately unresolved.
  • The gold-pouring backyard event — its deeper payoff remains unconfirmed by the community.

FAQ

Is Clyde ever a Doppelganger? Clyde in person is always human. A Clyde Doppelganger exists in the Night 3 customer pool — different entity, same face. Tools are your only reliable check since it has no documented tell.

Can I romance or save specific characters? The story routes all funnel through the Night 12 choice and the $250 check; individual NPC "saves" outside that structure aren't part of the current build.
