Norbert is Shift At Midnight's wildest card: a white-bearded, blue-hatted little man who looks like every Doppelganger red flag at once — and yet killing him is (usually) the wrong move. He's the subject of the "norbert shift at midnight" searches flooding in right now, so here's everything confirmed about him.

Who (or What) Is Norbert?

  • A short old man with a white beard and blue pointed hat — his in-game character model is literally named "Very Short Gnome wizard."
  • He carries a valid N.E.T. ID card under the name Norbert…
  • …but he does not appear in the N.E.T. Database when you look him up. A valid ID and no database entry is a contradiction no normal customer has.
  • He never answers verification questions. Head, clothes, limbs, movements — every check gets the same response: "Muahaha!" (Shoot him and he just yells "Yeowch!")

When Does He Appear?

  • First appearance: Shift 2, as a customer — he introduces himself at the counter ("Hello I am Norbert, is that all for today?") and stands behind the counter like he works there while paying.
  • Shifts 4 and 6: appears as a non-customer — running an unlicensed lemonade stand outside the store.
  • He recurs through later shifts in various chaos forms; the community hasn't compiled a complete appearance table yet. (One guide describes him as showing up throughout Story and Endless modes.)

Note: you may hear that "Norbert claims to be a wizard, and wizards don't exist, so he's a fake." That line is community hearsay without a verified in-game text source — what's confirmed is the gnome-wizard model and outfit. Treat the quote as unverified.

The Trap: Why You Shouldn't Treat Him Like a Doppelganger

Norbert has all the tells, but he's in a category of his own:

  1. Killing him does NOT trigger an Entity. A normal missed Doppelganger brings one of the five Entity types at shift's end. Killing Norbert instead triggers a chain reaction of chaos:
    • He rides a motorcycle through the store
    • His lemonade stand poisons you (no permit, no mercy)
    • He disguises himself as a customer — visible only through the Scanner
  2. He's effectively unkillable. Harming him just escalates: he'll try to trick you into killing real customers, or come after you directly. He's a maniacally laughing force of nature, not a target.

What Should You Actually Do?

Your goal The play
True Ending Serve him normally on first appearance and let him go. Complete the transaction, spare him — the community-tested recommendation for clean runs.
Content/chaos Attack him and enjoy the unpredictability (streamers love this route — his chaos is great footage).
Efficiency Don't waste ammo or scan-time on him. He's not the quota's problem.

Is Norbert a Doppelganger or Human?

No consensus exists. He's absent from both the Doppelganger list and the confirmed-human customer list. Destructoid calls him "the ultimate doppelganger test" — he has every tell, but his behavior is sui generis. The practical answer: treat him as a special chaos NPC, not a standard identification problem.

FAQ

Does Norbert affect the endings? Not directly — but harming him destabilizes your run (chaos events, wasted resources, accidental human kills), which indirectly threatens the $250 goal. Letting him live is the safe True Ending play.

Can I report his lemonade stand? The stand is part of his chaos cycle; there's no documented enforcement interaction that removes it permanently.

Does he appear in Endless Mode? Yes — guides report him recurring in Endless as well.
