The Missing Dog in Shift At Midnight — Guillermo, Tofu & the Red Herring
Every observant clerk notices the missing dog poster somewhere in the station — and immediately starts wondering: is that dog coming in as a customer, and should I do something about it? It's one of the most-discussed mysteries in Shift At Midnight. Here's everything the community has confirmed, and where the trail goes cold.
The Two Dogs
The confusion comes from two separate dogs existing in the game:
| Dog | Identity | Fur | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guillermo | The dog on the missing poster | Brown | Missing — the poster's subject |
| Tofu | A dog that visits the store as a customer | Golden | Present and accounted for — a service dog |
What Players Have Verified
The community (notably in the Steam guide discussions) has done the legwork:
- Tofu is not Guillermo. The poster dog is brown; Tofu is golden. Different dogs, full stop.
- Tofu is a service dog. When Tofu visits, look up the owner's name in the N.E.T. database: Tofu works for Charles Wigglebottom, a man who can't leave his house. Tofu shopping for its owner is normal, wholesome, and not a mystery to solve.
- The poster appears to be a red herring. Multiple players report there is no known way to "find" or "recover" Guillermo. The poster reads as world-building and misdirection rather than an active quest.
- A perfect night doesn't touch it. Players who achieved a perfect night while letting the dog come and go report no poster-related outcome.
The Theories Still Floating
Unconfirmed, in case future patches make one of them true:
- The gold-pouring backyard event might eventually connect to a pet-related storyline (speculation only — no demonstrated link).
- Some players originally read Tofu's visits as an omen that its owner had died; the database lookup disproves this — Charles Wigglebottom is alive enough to need groceries.
So What Should You Do?
- Tofu visits: treat like any customer. Check the database (Tofu → Charles Wigglebottom), complete the interaction, move on. It's not a Doppelganger.
- The poster: enjoy the atmosphere. Don't sink money or shift time into "solving" it — as of the current build, there's nothing to solve.
- If a patch ever makes the poster interactive, this page will be updated the same day the community confirms it.
FAQ
Is the missing dog a Doppelganger? No evidence either dog has a Doppelganger version. Tofu checks out clean in player testing.
Does letting the dog in affect the endings? No. Endings hinge on the Night 12 call and the $250 surgery money — see All Endings.
Can I keep the dog? Not in the current build. You choose one of four pets (Puppy/Husky/Kitty/Goose) separately — see the Money Guide for pet costs.
