If Twitch served you a clip of someone screaming at a gas station register, you just met Shift At Midnight — the indie horror game that became the platform's breakout hit of July 2026.

The Premise

You work the graveyard shift at a remote gas station. Customers come in, you scan their items, take payment — routine. Except some of your customers are not human. They're Doppelgangers: near-perfect copies with one wrong detail — a wrong name tag, a dead relative claimed alive, a face that distorts on camera. Spot the tell, reject the fake. Miss it, and the thing you let in comes hunting.

It's Papers, Please meets Lethal Company: bureaucratic identification by day (well, by night), survival horror when you screw up.

How It Plays

  1. Identify. Cross-reference every customer against the station database: photo, birth date, job, relatives. Read the nightly news board for clues. Unlock tools like the Anomaly Lens (a camera that reveals monsters directly) and the Emotiscope.
  2. Decide. Reject the humans you doubt and lose income; accept the monsters you miss and trigger a Hunt — a blind sound-hunting Entity, weeping-angel Demented, and the infamous Marionette music-box boss.
  3. Earn. Chores, boss tasks and the prize wheel fund your pet's $250 surgery — the key to the True Ending (there are three endings total).
  4. Survive 13 nights, then unlock Endless Mode.

Why It Blew Up

  • The identification tension is streamer gold. Watching someone talk themselves into (or out of) shooting a customer is inherently dramatic — and chat gets to backseat-detective.
  • The Doppelgangers are genuinely clever. A 3-year-old who arrives as an elderly woman. A man whose ID photo belongs to a dead man. Tells that require reading, not reflexes. (Full list here.)
  • It's cheap and short enough to spread. $10, a free demo, co-op with friends — the viral trifecta.

Is It Scary?

More dread than gore. The horror is slow-burn — distortions, wrong details, things standing where they shouldn't — punctuated by Hunt sequences that get properly intense. There's an Arachnophobia mode for the Entity's design, and accessibility options include adjustable text size.

Where to Start

The night shift is hiring. The pay is terrible, the customers are monsters, and somehow it's the most fun you'll have being terrified this year.
